Random Stuff List

October 18, 2015

You guys!

Maybe you’ve noticed things have been a bit quiet around here?

You see, the thing  is that I’ve been spending all my free time with my French lover, Jean-Pierre, doing, you know, French things like eating cheese and wearing stripes.

I mean, that’s basically the truth.

Except substitute “French lover” with “doing work.” And “eating cheese” with “grading papers.” So, you know, the same thing.

I’m hoping things  calm down a bit at work soon, and I’ll eventually be able to write a blog post that isn’t just a random collection of pumpkin recipes and cat links… but, until then, let’s talk pumpkin recipes and cat links!

1.  In addition to spending my weekends grading papers (I know, I know, you’re jealous), I spent last weekend at a teaching conference.

Because isn’t that exactly how you want to spend your Saturday? Watching Powerpoint presentations about summative assessment procedures. (Don’t ask. I still don’t know what it means. And I attended an entire hour-long presentation about it.)

I also gave a presentation at the conference. It was my first time giving a presentation at a conference in a super long time. It was also my first time giving a presentation during which I didn’t become super nervous and shake the entire time and break out into hives.

It helped that I had a co-presenter. It also helped that our presentation was at eight in the morning on a Saturday. You guys, it’s technically impossible to be nervous at eight o’clock on a Saturday morning because your brain hasn’t caught on to what is happening yet. It’s still like, “Whoa. Why are we awake? It’s eight o’clock on a Saturday morning!” It also helped that there were exactly five people in the audience. Because, seriously, you guys, EIGHT O’CLOCK ON A SATURDAY MORNING!

2. Umm, so something really weird happened this week. On Thursday morning, a whole bunch of people kept on liking a link on my Facebook page and I was like, “What are these people liking? I haven’t put anything on my Facebook page.” And then I looked at my page, and there was a link I had posted at 1 AM the night before along with a comment about it, and I totally didn’t remember posting anything at all.

So, basically, I sleep-Facebooked. Which I guess is a thing because Urban Dictionary says so.

Have you ever done this?

I’m kind of weirded out by it and a bit worried that my sleeping-self might start posting things on Facebook that my awake-self would never agree to. Like rants about how people need to stop pumpkin-spicing everything. Or photos of recent bodily injuries. (SERIOUSLY, YOU GUYS, WHY DO PEOPLE DO THAT??? I MEAN, WHY???)

(In case you’re wondering, this is the article I sleep-Facebook-linked-to. I don’t even remember reading the article.)

3. Speaking of doing weird things when you’re basically asleep, I’ve started going to the gym before work this week and it’s been a revelation. Mostly it’s a revelation that the world is actually alive and spinning at six o’clock in the morning. (You guys, I had no idea!).

This happened. At 6 AM. I KNOW!

This happened. At 6 AM. I KNOW!

But the other revelation is that I actually kind of enjoy it. I go to the gym on campus, which is crazy-packed with students in the afternoons.  Which means I occasionally run into my students while I’m there. Which means them confronting me while I’m doing something really awkward like leg lifts or wearing spandex.

But there’s hardly a single person there at six o’clock in the morning. Plus, I’m pretty sure I never have to worry about running into any of my students there at that hour, as they can barely make it to their nine o’clock classes. (But, I mean, can you blame them? I wouldn’t want to deal with me as a teacher every morning at nine o’clock. I can barely deal with me as a person every morning at nine o’clock.)

4. The whole reason why I started doing this is because when I tried on my winter pants after pulling them out of the plastic storage bin they’ve been hanging out in for the past six months, I noticed they had gotten a bit, shall we say, snug. I chalked it up to the fact that maybe the plastic storage bin had caused them to shrink. You know, like maybe it got kind of hot in there and caused all my pants to mysteriously get smaller. Because that is a thing that happens, right?

But then I had a physical this week and my sweet Czech doctor pointed out the fact that I had gained some weight and basically shot down my plastic-bin-causing-pants-shrinkage theory. Which, you have to admit, was a pretty good theory. I mean, it’s possible I lost my calling as a scientist.

5. And then because I’m all about being healthy this week, I discovered cauliflower gratin. OMIGOD YOU GUYS. It’s basically macaroni and cheese but healthy. Because cauliflower! (Nevermind the half a stick of butter and cup and a half of cheese.)

Cauliflower gratin. I realize it does not look pretty. But OMIGOD it's good.

6. Speaking of recipes you need to try right now, this recipe for pumpkin spice granola is MY EVERYTHING.

7. In case you need suggestions for your binge-watching habit, may I recommend the new PBS Masterpiece show, Indian Summers? It’s like Downton Abbey meets Slumdog Millionaire. And because it’s about stuff like the oppression of colonization in India and the resulting unrest, you don’t feel bad about binge-watching the first few episodes because HISTORY.

Also, in case, you don’t watch Fresh Off the Boat, you need to right now. I’m pretty sure it’s the funniest thing on television at the moment.

8. Umm, you guys, I discovered this weekend that Target now sells Halloween cards from your cat. Because it’s like they know all my hopes and dreams.

9. Speaking of Halloween, have we decided what costume we’re wearing, yet?

I’m pretty sure I need to wear this t-shirt to work.

And I think this video tutorial on unicorn makeup could be helpful.

10. It’s cat video link time!

First up, this video of a cat attacking its own tail.

Secondly, these cats with human mouths will haunt your dreams.

And, of course, this cat dressed as a pirate is maybe the best thing on the Internet.

That’s all, you guys! Have any recipes/binge-watching-suggestion/Halloween-costume-ideas/cat-links to share? Let me have ’em!

I've blathered on long enough! Now it's your turn!

Sleep-facebooking is one of my great fears in life – I’m so awkward when I’m awake, imagine how I’d be while while asleep… I’d always dismissed it as irrational but now you’re saying it’s a real thing that happens?!

IT REALLY HAPPENED. I felt like my body had been possessed by some kind of spirit or something. At least the spirit likes to share socially responsible articles…. he/she could have shared a lot worse stuff.

You have been keeping busy. That’s also good. No, problem, the blog will be here waiting for you. Good luck with all your plans.
Until then we can in an arm-chair under a blanket, listen to the Autumn rain and read some of your older posts.

Well, I wish I was keeping busy with fun stuff, like apple cider and donuts and fall camping trips, and not boring stuff, like grading research papers. But, oh well, I guess it’s keeping me from spending too much money.

Ha, I cannot even imagine any college students going to the gym at 6am. 🙂 And even many regular people don’t, as evidenced by it being only me and one other woman in my small gym on the mornings I manage to make it there at that hour. (Which – sadly – isn’t as many mornings I’d like, but, hey!, somethings better than nothing!) Also – yes, the pumpkin spice craze needs to end.

Uh, yeah, after my 2 whole days of working out at 6 and feeling like a rockstar, I never went back. It turns out I don’t actually like going to the gym enough to get out of bed before I absolutely have to. So, I’m trying to think up a new workout plan… one that doesn’t involve just sitting on my couch and thinking of my new workout plan, hopefully.
Oh, and I’m totally on board with the pumpkin spice craze. Even though I don’t love all the creations (I oddly hate pumpkin spice latte, the one thing everyone seems to love), to me it signals fall and I love all things fall.
