Random Stuff List

June 28, 2015

You guys, what a week, right?

I’ve spent most of the week grading papers, and grumbling about grading papers, and dreaming of the end of next week when I will be on summer break and won’t have to grade another paper in TWO WHOLE MONTHS SO HELP ME GOD.

But, then, Friday rolled around and I spent the day in front of my computer, watching news of SCOTUS’ decision to legalize gay marriage, and feeling ALL THE FEELINGS, and posting cat GIFs on Facebook.

Because this is how I deal with ALL THE FEELINGS.

With cat GIFs. That’s normal, right?

Let’s talk about some random stuff, shall we?

1. I loved this post by Ayngelina from Bacon is Magic about why you should quit your job and travel solo.

Although, admittedly, I don’t think everyone should/can/would quit their job to travel. I mean, it’s kind of a big, fat privilegey thing to do, and some people don’t really have that privilege.

But the point in the post that got me yelling all kids of YASSSSS was this: “Don’t let being alone prevent you from doing amazing things.”

I really think this applies to ALL THE THINGS, not just traveling. If there’s one thing you really, really want to do, but you don’t have anyone who wants to do it with you, don’t let that stop you. Just go out and do that thing. Whether it be traveling or camping or eating dinner at a fancy restaurant or going to a male strip show.

(Okay, maybe not that last one. That’s not something you should do on your own. Or ever, really. Trust me, I speak from experience.)

Don't. Just don't.

Don’t. Just don’t.

2. Speaking of traveling, here are some great road trip tips from Sarah at Yes and Yes.

I’m even kind of tempted to follow her advice to rent a car when I go on my big Upper Peninsula/Wisconsin road trip next week. (NEXT WEEK!)

My car’s okay, but the brakes are super squishy. And, omigod, how nice would it be to drive a car with satellite radio? I have no idea what that would even be like. I mean, being able to listen to something because I want to listen to it and not because it’s the only thing that I can get to tune in on my grandma-mobile’s AM/FM radio? That sounds like some kind of dream world.

3. And probably my favorite travely-post from the week with the best title ever: I’m Not Sorry for Traveling While Fat.

As a plus-sized lady who hasn’t let a little thing like her pants size stop her from traveling, can I just say HELL YEAH. I mean, I am so happy that this is something people are talking about right now on the Internets, and in a way that is unapologetic and honest and joyful. And not in a I’m-sorry-I’m-fat-and-I’ll-promise-to-lose-weight kind of way.

Being big is just like being alone — it’s something that could make you really self conscious and hold you back from traveling, but it shouldn’t.

Just make sure you pack plenty of pants before you go!

4. Oh and if you’re looking for a few more travely reads, here’s a list of 2,300 travel blogs. That should keep you busy for, oh, Idunno, the NEXT 2,300 YEARS OF YOUR LIFE.

In case you’re wondering, my blog is listed as #123 in the category of  Solo Woman Travel Blogs. Because I guess Solo-Netflix-Binging-Cat-Lady Travel Blogs is not a category that exists. (But if it was, hoooo boy, I’m pretty sure I’d be #1!).

5. Hey, remember when I used to write bucket lists for every single season and then maybe only do one or two things off the list because I’m lazy and doing things on your bucket list usually requires wearing pants?

Well, after reading Joy the Baker’s bucket list for this summer, I’m thinking I may have to resurrect this tradition.

Or maybe just dust off last year’s list and put on some pants and start doing some stuff?

6. One of the items on my summer bucket list from last year was to have a beach day — complete with trashy magazines and a big fat sun umbrella and coconut-smelling sunscreen and sand in my sandwich.

This did not happen.

The closest I got was taking lots of feet-selfies on the beach.

I told myself this was because the few times I was on or near a beach either the water was too cold or the sand was too rocky or the sun was too sunny or some-such-something-or-rather.

But I suspect it had more to do with the fact that I’m still not super-cool with the whole-wearing-a-swimsuit-in-public-thing, which I know is super stupid and I know I just said, like, two days ago that I’m on a journey of body acceptance (cue hippy-dippy, yoga music). BUT, GAH, YOU GUYS, WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME!

Anyway, I’m determined to make this the year that I actually put a swimsuit on and head to the beach, and not have so many hangups about the whole thing. Because, sure, I will not look like a Victoria’s Secret model, but I can at least look like these ladies who were trying to look like Victoria’s Secret models, right?

7. Thrillist has declared Michigan is the best state in the nation. I guess that means you’re all coming to visit, right?

You got to admit that any state that let's you use your hand as a map is cool.

8. Umm, remember last week when I was completely obsessed with beans?

Well, my obsession has taken an oddly British turn. Yesterday, I had a super strong craving for beans on toast. I mean, like, SUPER STRONG. It was the kind of craving I would usually have for ice cream way back in my pre-acid-reflux days when ice cream didn’t make feel sick and want to die. (Wah!)

It was all very strange as I can’t even remember ever having eaten the stuff when I lived in Britain. But, no matter, I was on a mission.

And, you guys, it was SO GOOD and the perfect comfort food for a rainyish, coldish day. Why don’t we eat this in America?

Beans on toast. It's what's for dinner.

I just went with vegetarian baked beans on buttered toast and added a little grated cheese because I’m fancy, but if you want to go all-out-fancy-pants, you could do something like this.

9. Another comfort food I find myself craving on cold, rainy days even though I don’t remember eating it a lot in Japan: Japanese-style curry. Which is oddly sweet and nothing at all like Indian curry.

And now I’d really like Japanese curry in the shape of Miyajima shrine, please.

10. I think maybe you need a video of a baby goat dressed as a flower.

You’re welcome.

Howdy friends, how was your week? Have any comfort food cravings/cat GIFS/travely posts to share? Let me have ’em!

I've blathered on long enough! Now it's your turn!

First of all, thank you for eating beans on toast the proper way. Buzzfeed just did a video called ‘Americans try beans on toast’ and it was just done all wrong. Cold beans and cold toast. NO. Hot toast with butter, hot beans and grated cheese. Sally, you win.

Second of all, I’m right with you on the swimsuit thing. Only a few years ago I was all over any beach I could in my swimsuit. Now it doesn’t fit so I don’t want to go near a swimsuit. :/ We’ll work on that.

Cold beans on cold toast?? What the freaking heck? Is Buzzfeed drunk??
And, yes, here’s to a summer of actually getting into a bathing suit!

Thank you thank you for the part about traveling solo! I took my first solo trip (to Burlington VT) when I was 23 and it was LIFE CHANGING. It sounds dramatic but it really changes how you feel about the world and about yourself. The feeling of being able to go anywhere and try anything, without needing to consult with anyone, is irreplaceable!

Let’s head to South Haven when you get back. First, we’ll eat ice cream at Sherman’s, and then we’ll head to the beach. IN OUR SWIMSUITS. We’ve got this!
